With the recent announcement of the finalists of the 2019 Learning Awards, we start a new series of L&D QuestionTime in which we hear from this years finalists.

Today we hear from David Bedlow shortlisted in the Learning Leader of The Year category.

In your opinion what is the biggest anxiety within the world of learning and development at the moment?

I wouldn’t call it an anxiety but getting a proven return on your investment in learning is always a priority, and always ensuring L&D has a place at the top table of the organisation

Who or what is informing your thinking around L&D?

I am always learning myself, as I believe if you work in L&D you should always be learning. I take a lot from social media, and also from fellow professionals and trade events

What is the most exciting innovation on the horizon for learning?

The continuing innovation in learning is how technology can impact on how, when and where people learn. We are continually looking to embrace all methods of learning in the programmes we develop

What “game changers” would you like to see and why?

From a personal point of view, I would like L&D to be recognised as an awards category in our own industry sector awards. Areas such as technology are recognised in the mortgage industry, but L&D has no category at any of our own industry awards. This would raise the profile of L&D in our own sector enormously if it had its own awards category

What do you think the world of L&D will look like by 2030?

L&D will be more of a conduit for learning rather just the provider, and more self directed learning available from multiple sources

What advice would you give your 21 year old self?

Plenty of personal stuff! But from a work perspective, ensure that you help change the game rather than be changed by the game.
